Thiruvananthapuram: For the past few days, Kerala has been unabatedly fighting quite a wide array of oddities including floods, heavy downpour, landslides, and lack of basic amenities. The disaster has claimed around 200 lives. Over 1.5 lakh were displaced and moved into safe locations. 82,442 affected people were rescued by the forces within 24 hours, yesterday. All other calamities the state has encountered in the last century, fails to draw any kind of parallels with the magnitude of this disastrous flood of our times.
Even when Government of Kerala and rescue forces are working soulfully on a mission to save each and every one hit by the distress, it has to be taken into account that those who have been moved safely into the relief camps need critical care and basic amenities. These people, as much as 2 lakh in number, have lost everything they possessed, and are struggling on the disaster front.
Volunteers and coordinators are now keen on putting together all the resources they can accumulate, and are finding ways to share it efficiently to reach all. Fundamental supplies including food, clothes and medicines are collected from different centres, and are also bought with the fund they have raised.

However, one of the neediest, yet the least supplied amenities to these camps are sanitary napkins. Women who are caught in the crowded camps will be thrown into a severe crisis if the volunteers fail to supply the necessary numbers of napkins they need. Social media campaigns are on full swing, to ensure that the affected women are not pushed into further plight of unhygienic bleeding in the midst of all this agony.
Along with the high demand for fresh undergarments, need for sanitary napkins should also be met adeptly. Activists are spreading word all over the social media channels, explaining the vitality of sanitary napkins, and also enlightening the public on what kind of napkins should be bought.
Campaigns are on, requesting volunteer groups and napkin manufacturers to act according to the situation and make sure that no relief camps are running short of napkins. It is necessary to see that a set of people who are already displaced and torn apart are not forced to tackle another set of adversities.
