‘The idea of Kathir Farm stems from my interest in agriculture. It was in March 2016 that I began digging ponds. I then planted fruit trees and used the excavated soil to build roads. My aim was not just to create a tourist spot but also to offer people fresh fruits and vegetables directly from the farm. We opened the farm to the public in 2017. That’s how I ventured into tourism. By 2018-19, I became a part of the RT Mission,’ says Kabir Tharamannil, the owner of Kathir Farm.
Apart from agriculture, the farm hosts a space called Kalappura, which has become a cultural hub of the region. Numerous cultural events are held here, including harvest festivals .
Schoolchildren frequently visit the farm to learn about agriculture. When asked about the name ‘Kathir,’ Kabir explains, ‘Kathir means the seed of a beginning, and that’s why the name was chosen.’
Kathir Farm is adorned with paddy fields swaying in the breeze, rabbit and guinea enclosures along the walkway, roaming cats, clucking hens, and ducks paddling in the pond. These elements add to the charm of the farm.
A suspension bridge leading to an islet in a 25cent water reservoir is a major attraction. The pond features pedal boats and traditional boats, providing ample entertainment for visitors. The serene ambiance and delicious food further enhance Kathir Farm’s appeal.
Kathir began as a fish farm in a 4acre coconut grove, initially attracting visitors who came to enjoy meals and explore the ponds. Gradually, it transformed into a family destination with the addition of children’s rides and other attractions. Fresh fruits like watermelons, red lady papayas, and passion fruits, grown on-site, have become popular beverages among visitors.
Kathir offers a glimpse into the old Kerala lifestyle, where living was in harmony with nature. The traditional hall with a thatched palm-leaf roof adds to the farm’s rustic allure. Cultural gatherings are held here most evenings.
A restaurant designed in the style of a traditional Kerala boat, Chundan Vallam, is another creative addition to Kathir. The farm emphasizes the concept of farm-to-table dining, where fruits and vegetables are directly sourced from the farm to the kitchen. The use of natural, traditional recipes without artificial flavors has made Kathir popular among visitors.
