Dalit Boy Dropped From Study Tour; Parents Sue School Officials

Malappuram: After a Dalit higher secondary student from Kerala’s Malappuram Districts was barred from participating in the school study tour, his parents moved to the police complaining against the school authorities.

The incident took place at Eranhimangad Government Higher Secondary School. According to the authorities, the Dalit boy was dropped from the list of students embarking study tour after he allegedly “misbehaved with teachers” a few days ago. The boy’s mother, who belongs to Panapoyil region of Chaliyar Panchayat, has companied against the school officials at Nilambur police station.

The mother, in her complaint, stated that the incident devastated student leaving him extremely upset.

Meanwhile, a memorandum undersigned by as many as 60 students has been submitted to the principal requesting him to allow the said student to participate in the study tour. The mother has also submitted a copy of the same to the cops.  The study tour is expected to take place on 22 November.

Following the complaint, the police summoned teachers and officials of the Parents Teachers Association. They reportedly communicated to the police that the final decision will be taken after a PTA general body meeting on Monday.

The incident invited heavy criticism from different corners with many of them coming down heavily on the alleged ‘casteist approach’ of the authorities.
